We present an introduction to the logic and design of tension ,especialy fabric, structures.
This is written by John Thornton, a director of Ove Arup and partners. This is followed by a picture essay of IPL, a West German company spesialising in the science.

Some of the most dramatic and interesting structures that have been built over the last fifty years have been tension structure. A particular characteristic of these is that the influence of the structural engineer on the design is far greater than with conventional building.
