But the communists were making their own plans as well.Seeing North Korea's Army faltering badly,China volunteered to help. When China was fighting its own war between the nationalists Kuomintang and the Chinese Communist Party,Kim II Sung, leader of DPRK, had sent tens of thousans of Korean soldiers to aid Mao's forces. With the Chinese Communists' victory in 1949, Mao saw it necessary to fulfill his obligation to North Korea. In October 1950 China entered the Korean War.
With a massive Sino-North Korean army, the communists reversed the gains made by the South Korean and American troops, hammering Mac Arthur's men back across the 38th parallel.Like a ping-pong game,Seoul was again in danger of falling to the North.
Alarmed at China's involvement, Washington escalated its involvement. American President Harry Truman warned that 'it looks like World War III is here.'In November 1950 he threatened to use atomic bombs; General MacArthur submitted plans to drop 26 of them.
Fortunately, the bombs were never used as the fighting receded. With the war locked in a stalemate for the next two years, and after more than two million deaths and the complete destruction of almost every city and town on the Korean Peninsula, someone stumbled upon the brilliant idea that peace was the only solution. In 1953 an armistice was agreed upon;the truce line was drawn through the Demilitarized Zone, where until today Korean brother stares hatefully at brother.
South Korea, or the Republic of Korea, has its form of government modelled on that of the United Sates, with an executive presidency and the legislative National Assembly. Its first president was Syngman Rhee (Yi Seung Man), a longtime opponent of Japan's occupation of Korea.
Rhee had spent almost 40 years in the United States, where he married an Austrian woman and obtained his PhD from Princeton University. After the war he returned to Korea, and with General MacArthur's support, Rhee quickly established himself as America's choice for President of the Republic of Korea. When the election was called on 10 May 1948,he won decisively.
Democratically installed but despotically inclined, Rhee entrenched his rule through police brutality, press censorship, mass arrests of political opponents, and rantings against the communists (mainly for the benefit of the Americans).
He cheated, threatened and murdered his way through three elections until 19 April 1960, when some 100,000 students and youths gathered outside the Presidential Palace calling for him to desist from his outrageous behaviour. He greeted the protester with gunfire, killing more than one hundred and injuring another thousand.
